BBC Radio Interview: How Reptiles Are Safely Transported Across the UK

Today, we were invited onto BBC Radio Gloucestershire to speak on Caroline Martin’s breakfast show about something a little unusual: how reptiles are transported safely across the UK.

It’s not something most people think about—but behind the scenes, there’s a lot of care, planning, and experience involved in moving animals responsibly.

We also had the chance to talk more broadly about reptile ownership, common misconceptions, and the work we do at Scaly Safari.

The conversation covered a few different areas, including:

Transporting reptiles safely

Moving reptiles isn’t as simple as placing them in a box and hoping for the best.

Every journey needs to consider:

  • temperature stability

  • secure containment

  • minimal stress

  • and careful handling throughout

This is exactly why services like our ScalyExpress reptile courier exist - because getting it wrong isn’t an option.

Reptiles aren’t what people expect

One of the things we always find - whether it’s at a party, in a care home or in a school - is that people’s expectations rarely match reality.

Reptiles aren’t:

  • slimy

  • aggressive

  • or unpredictable

They’re calm, measured, and often surprisingly grounding to be around.

And when people experience that for themselves, something shifts.

Responsible reptile ownership

We also touched on what it actually means to keep reptiles well.

Good reptile care isn’t about:

  • quick setups

  • guesswork

  • or following outdated advice

It’s about:

  • understanding the species

  • creating the right environment

  • and getting things right from the beginning

Which is exactly why we’ve started creating digital Starter Guides - to help new owners feel confident and informed from day one.

What we do at Scaly Safari

For those new to us, Scaly Safari is built around one core idea:

That calm, respectful encounters with reptiles can change the way people see them.

We provide:

Everything we do is designed to feel:

  • calm

  • safe

  • and genuinely engaging

A different kind of conversation

It was a brilliant conversation, and a chance to talk about reptiles in a way that goes beyond the usual headlines. Not shock value, or fear - just a more grounded, realistic understanding of what these animals are - and what it means to work with them properly.
