Tallulah

Brazilian salmon pink birdeater
Lasiodora parahybana

A gentle giant

Tallulah belongs to one of the largest tarantula species in the world. Her dark body is covered with beautiful salmon-pink hairs that become more noticeable when the light catches them.

Despite the dramatic name, “birdeater” doesn’t mean birds are her usual meal. Like most tarantulas, she primarily hunts insects and other small prey.

Remarkable facts

Among the giants
Brazilian salmon pink birdeaters can develop a leg span of more than 25cm.

Built to sense
The hairs covering Tallulah’s body help her detect tiny movements and vibrations around her.

A patient predator
Rather than chasing prey over long distances, tarantulas usually wait until something ventures close enough to strike.

Girls rule
Female tarantulas can live considerably longer than males—potentially 15–25 years in this species.
