Hades

Electric blue earth tiger tarantula
Chilobrachys natanicharum

Hidden in the web

Hades may not make himself easy to find. Electric blue earth tigers are secretive spiders that build elaborate tunnels and retreats from layers of silk.

Look carefully into the webbing with the torch. If you’re lucky, you might catch a sudden flash of electric blue.

Remarkable facts

A recently recognised species
Chilobrachys natanicharum was formally described by scientists in 2023 after being found in southern Thailand.

Venom with a purpose

Like all tarantulas, Hades is venomous. He uses his venom to subdue prey—not to hunt humans. Bites from Old World tarantulas can cause significant symptoms, so Hades is admired through the glass and never handled.

Blue—but without blue pigment
The extraordinary colour is produced by microscopic structures that interact with light, creating a metallic blue or violet appearance.

An expert architect
Hades uses silk to transform his surroundings into a network of tunnels, entrances and hiding places.

Speed is his defence
As an Old World tarantula, he doesn’t possess the defensive urticating hairs used by many American species. He relies upon speed, concealment and defensive behaviour instead.
